Thursday Late Line: Cheltenham Tips For The Last 2 Races On Day 3

Two bets for the races at Cheltenham on Thursday which take place after the terrestrial cameras stop rolling.

Thursday’s Cheltenham Festival card rounds off with two big-field races that will not be shown on terrestrial TV. Here is how to play the Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle and the Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase.

4.50 Cheltenham - Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle

It is remarkable to think that Fergal O’Brien, a mainstay of the top ten in the British trainers’ championship standings these days, has never had a winner at the Cheltenham Festival. Crambo in the Stayers’ Hurdle has been his big hope on the week and by the time we get to the Dawn Run we will know how he has got on.

Even if Crambo has come up short, O’Brien can have his winner here with Dysart Enos. This mare was smart in bumpers, she won a Listed race at Market Rasen and followed up in a Grade 2 at Aintree. She has run three times over hurdles and remains unbeaten, although she has been crabbed in some quarters for not beating much.

The weakness of the bare form is not denied, but Dysart Enos has looked very much like a horse running beneath herself so far. She was a ready winner at Huntingdon and Doncaster, while in between she got some important course experience in by winning in soft ground in December. She can take another step forward now and deliver the Cheltenham winner her trainer has longed for.

5.30 - Kim Muir Amateur Riders’ Handicap Chase

Like any Cheltenham Festival handicap, the Kim Muir has its share of Irish plots hidden in plain sight. But there are British plot jobs too, and just beneath the surface it is possible to see that Bowtogreatness‘s entire season has been built around spring staying handicaps in general, and the Cheltenham Festival in particular.

Bowtogreatness has always looked a stayer, but connections waited until Aintree last season to step him up in distance. There he shaped as well as winner Midnight River over 3m1f, with a sketchy jump at the last costing him dear.

He reappeared in deep ground at Newbury in December, seemingly not fit, and then really caught the eye in a hot novices’ handicap chase here in January. Back at 3m last time, Bowtogreatness tanked through a Premier handicap at Kempton, but just paid for a sweeping move around the field late on and finished third.

Bowtogreatness has course experience, remains unexposed as a stayer and is now bang-on fit after his Kempton run. He had also been doubly entered at Ascot the week before, suggesting the run was needed to put the final touches on his spring prep. The big day is surely coming, and it might be in the Kim Muir.
