Cheltenham Day 3 Preview & Tips

We’ve picked out five selections from the five ITV/ Virgin Media for Thursday’s races including some value picks at double figure prices.

Day three of the Cheltenham Festival brings us more top class action from the home of jumps racing including three Grade 1s and some fiendishly competitive handicaps.

We’ve picked out five selections from the five ITV/ Virgin Media for Thursday’s races including some value picks at double figure prices.

1.30 Turners Novices’ Chase (Grade 1)

It’s a slight surprise to see Ginny’s Destiny drifting in the betting for Thursday’s opener given his rock solid course form. He’s improved with every run over fences so far, showing a game attitude from the front to beat the re-opposing favourite Grey Dawning at the December meeting before producing a career best on trials day when repeating those front running tactics.

Front runners that jump well can be hard to catch on the old course at Cheltenham, as we saw in this race last year with Stage Star, and trainer Paul Nicholls has solid claims of landing back-to-back renewals.

2.10 Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle

This is always one of the most competitive races of the week and this year’s renewal is no different. Le Milos might be the one to side with.

He’s a strong stayer over fences and the recent rain that has come could really bring his stamina into play in what could become a gruelling test. He’s 8lb lower than his chase mark for this hurdle contest and his low key pipe opener for this at Ascot last month is easily forgiven. Expect him to show a lot more this time.

2.50 Ryanair Chase (Grade 1)

The trip for the Ryanair is short of Ahoy Senor’s best but he’s another one that will appreciate the recent rainfall and this could turn into a test of stamina.

Lucinda Russell’s nine-year-old was in fine form towards the back end of last season and has started to come back to himself since the turn of the year, running well in the Cotswold Chase before tack issues scuppered his chance at this venue and he was given too much to do at Ascot subsequently. Expect a switch of tactics back to his preferred front-running style and he could be hard to pass.

3.30 Stayers’ Hurdle (Grade 1)

He might be vulnerable for win purposes but it’s hard to see Paisley Park out of the frame, with BoylesSports paying an extra place on the race.

He’s been running some big races in defeat all season and stuck to his task well in the Cleeve on trials day when only beaten a head. Softer ground won’t be an issue and he can outrun his odds.

4.10 Plate Handicap Chase

The Plate isn’t quite as competitive as some of the other handicaps through the week and the one that may be able to take advantage is Il Ridoto.

He was unsuited by the step up to three miles last time but he ran a massive race when just touched off by Fugitif (runs in the Ryanair) earlier this season and a repeat of that effort could be good enough from just a 3lb higher mark here in similar conditions.
