What is SmartView?

Overview

Racing Post SmartView is the new unbiased, comprehensive and intuitive tool for all racing fans. Using our unrivalled racing database, our team of data scientists has applied mathematical modelling and machine learning techniques to generate an objective assessment across six key attributes for horses in all British and Irish races.

These are presented in a format that allows you to either home in on individual attributes or be guided by the overall SmartView score, which is a weighted average of the six attributes and, like them, is scored out of 100.

Whether you’re a seasoned form student or a casual punter, Racing Post SmartView can help you to make more informed choices and more successful bets.

List of attributes with explainers

Ability
A blend of ability, recent form, pedigree and potential. Ability and recent form are driven by our best-in-class Racing Post Ratings, which are compiled by our expert handicappers. For debutants and unexposed horses, we use machine learning algorithms trained on 35+ years of historic data, including pedigree stats, to predict a horse’s ability and potential.

Trainer
Unique trainer ratings derived from our comprehensive database. These take into account the quality of the horses in a trainer’s stable and their performance statistics, such as winners, course records and recent form.

Jockey
Unique jockey ratings derived from our comprehensive database. These take into account the quality of a jockey’s rides and their performance statistics, such as winners, course records, record for trainer, and recent form.

Ground
A measurement of a horse’s suitability to the current official going, based on their win/place stats and performance ratings on different types of ground. This attribute is dynamic so it adjusts to changing ground conditions.

Jumping
An assessment of a runner’s jumping ability. We use bespoke algorithms which account for many factors such as the horse’s jumping in previous races, the quality of their jockey, and the test of jumping they face today.

Distance
Provides an assessment of whether a runner has the right blend of speed and stamina to be suited by today’s race distance. It’s derived from analysing runner’s past performances in races at different distances alongside relevant pedigree data.

Draw
Our algorithms consider historical and recent draw data to identify from which stalls and at which courses runners are likely to enjoy draw advantage, or conversely be hindered by the draw. A higher score suggests horses are likely to be favoured by the draw.

Course
Quantifies the form horses have shown at today’s course in the past. For horses with no prior course experience, analysis of races at similar courses is used to determine the likelihood of the horse suiting today’s track.

Overall score
Weighted average of the attributes which is scored out of 100. As each runner is given an overall score it can be considered to be a prediction with the highest scorer the predicted winner.
